The 81 square universe shogi league
To get more out of our expirence in this awesome forum i propose we set up a league for all the shogi players here. it shall be called the 81SUS league and will be made of 16 people.
there will be games against others every week and if we get loads and loads of players we just create more divisions.
we could be the first ever online shogi league ever!
as for rules and pionts
1piont for a win
0.5 pionts for a draw
0 for a loss
there will also be a coin toss to determine who is white and black.
it will be three 7minute +30sec games
so do you think its a good idea once we get more people and that?

I think this is a great idea. We could also attempt to be a standard for online ratings. I'm in.

Re: The 81 square universe shogi league
How does this look?
We'll also need someone to create formulas and manage the actual rankings, as well as a way to organize tournaments, etc.
81 SQUARE UNIVERSE RANKING LEAGUE
PURPOSE: To provide participating members of The 81 Square Universe a standard ranking system.
PROCEDURE:
*Games between participating players will be held weekly.
*Sente and Gote shall be decided by furigoma (pawn toss) by the organizer who drafts the matchings. If the organizer does not have a shogi set with which to perform furigoma, he or she may use 5 coins to determine Sente and Gote. Heads will be regarded as the Fuhyou side, and Tails will be regarded as the Tokin side.
*In order to save time, ranking league games are to have a time limit of 7 minutes with 30 second byoyomi after time has been consumed.
*Ranking games are to be played on www.PlayOK.com, and shall be a RATED game, so that participants can verify the accuracy of games.
*Participants are to record their results on the forums, including who won and how the game ended (resignation, checkmate, time consumed, repetition, impasse).
*In the event that a player will not be able to show up for a scheduled ranked game, provided he or she notifies the organizers at least two days before the game, the game may be postponed.
*If prior notification is not given and a participant does not show up for his or her game, he or she will forfeit the game.
*If neither player shows up for their rated game, provided they have a reasonable excuse, the game will be postponed. If no reasonable excuse is given, it will result in a draw for both players.
*A win will be worth 1 point, a loss will be worth 0 points, and a draw will be worth 0.5 points.
We'll also need someone to create formulas and manage the actual rankings, as well as a way to organize tournaments, etc.
Re: The 81 square universe shogi league
well a simple spreadsheet should do it
i could get my step-dad to set up a spreadsheet easily (since he is an accountant)

Re: The 81 square universe shogi league
I can do a spreadsheet, but we would need someone to create and organize a rating system (ELO and dan system) so that the 81SU Ranking League does its job in actually creating ranks.

There are two ways to go about this. Either you can go down the ELO route, and have mathematically calculated ranks, or you can take a much more simple "ladder" approach.
I'm involved in a couple of Go leagues, and the work simply by having a list of players in order. You can challenge people up to three places ahead of you. If you win the game, you swap places with them. If you lose, you remain at the same spot. It's simple, but effective. New players can either start at the bottom, or can challenge a player they know who is a similar rank.
You can look here to the system in a bit more detail: http://senseis.xmp.net/?GoDiscussionsCom%2FLadder
It's a lot less official and mathematical, but it does work very effectively and removes a lot of wrangling over numbers.

Re: The 81 square universe shogi league
This ladder system looks like it would work quite well. The initial ladder could be based on PlayOK rank or similar if any of our members don't use PlayOK.
Thanks for pointing this out.

Well we could have a round-robin tournament system which determines the ladder ranks, and outside of scheduled matches, you can challenge someone with the ladder to try to gain more points outside of scheduled games.
