Here's a small variant I found online that wasn't on Wikipedia.
Sho-chan

I'm particularly fond of it. Here's the starting setup:
SGKGS
_____
_PPP_
_ppp_
_____
sgkgs

The only promotion is pawns to gold on the last row.

I think that it'd be good for teaching new players shogi, because the gold and silver are generally the pieces which beginners have the most trouble with, in my experience.

I'm not sure it does since double pawn is illegal and if Sente takes two pawns in the 1st and 3rd moves, then one of them will be not able to be captured by Gote's generals.

If double pawn is legal, then I agree that the set up gives Sente the advantage.
